Suicide and Childhood Substance Use PreventionMission
We are ASPEC — the Addiction & Suicide Prevention and Education Coalition of Republic County. Bringing together 12 community sectors, we are united by a single goal: improving the lives of young people by addressing the deep connection between substance use and mental health. We believe every child in our county deserves to grow up safe, supported, and full of hope. And we show up — consistently, collectively — because no family should face this alone, and no child's life is expendableProfile
The Facts — In Republic County, children struggling with depression are far more likely to turn to alcohol with 13% of them starting at age 10 or younger—and the consequences are severe. Among youth who report depression, 20% began drinking at an early age, while 96% of kids without depression don't drink at all. Most striking: the children drinking three or more times a month are the same children reporting depression and suicidal thoughts — a pattern not seen among their peers who don't drink.
Why it matters —No child's life should be lost to addiction or suicide and we refuse to accept that outcome. The data makes the connection impossible to ignore. But more importantly, it points us toward action. Ours is a community with both the will and the ability to grow healthy, resilient children…and that is exactly what we intend to do.
